Congratulations to Carla Dohmwirth who has successfully defended her PhD thesis titled „Women, collective action and empowerment – An economic approach“. Her research project focused on the analysis of women’s empowerment in collective action in agriculture. In three empirical papers dealing with case studies from the prominent dairy cooperative sector in South India, impacts of the choice of organizational form – in particular membership in women-only, mixed-gender dairy cooperatives or non-membership – on outcomes relevant to women’s empowerment were analysed. The focus was on intra-household and cooperative-level decision making as indicators of empowerment. The research indicates that context conditions matter to explain the heterogeneous performance of women-only cooperatives. Therefore, when supporting the formation of women-only cooperatives, attention should be paid to appropriate accompanying measures at different levels and stages of cooperative development.
